Jutta Hipp

The reissue of an album recorded by Jutta Hipp who died 5 years ago at the age of 78, causes René Zipperlen to write a feature about the pianist who was born in Leipzig, made a career in West Germany in the early 1950s, then emigrated to the USA in 1955, only to end her career in the late 1950s and subsequently earn her money as a cutter in a clothes factory. Only after her death her colleagues learned about the "other" career of Jutta Hipp.

Zipperlen quotes the jazz historian Katja von Schuttenbach for whom "Leonard Feather, Hipp's mentor and nemesis, offers a key to her secret". Zipperlen: "Obviously he also had an extra-musical interest in the red-haired woman. When she did not give in to his approaches (she was engaged to the Hungarian guitarist Attila Zoller) and also refused to play Feather's compositions, she fell out of favor with him." The reissued album is Hipp's third Blue Note release, "Jutta Hipp with Zoot Sims".
