Legendary trumpeter Joe Wilder and jazz historians Phil Schaap and Ed Berger share their insight and expertise in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s jazz courses this Spring.
·Charlie Parker with Phil Schaap (Mondays, Feb 25-Mar 17, 2008; 6:30-8:30 p.m.): Charlie Parker’s style was the core of bebop. Learn the details about his life and partnerships with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Max Roach.
·Joe Wilder: My Life In Jazz with Joe Wilder & Ed Berger (Mondays, Mar 24-Apr 14, 2008; 6:30-8:30 p.m.): A unique collaboration with trumpet legend Joe Wilder and historian Ed Berger that examines aspects of jazz history from the Big Band Era to the present through Wilder’s personal experiences.
·Jazz 101 with Phil Schaap (Wednesdays, Mar 26-May 14 2008; 6:30-8:30 p.m.): An introduction to the music for enriched enjoyment with the walking encyclopedia of jazz, Phil Schaap.
·Jazz 301 with Phil Schaap (Tuesdays, Mar 25-May 13, 2008; 6:30-9:30 p.m.): Intensive three-hour classes help you learn jazz history at a great depth. An optional final will be given two weeks after the last class and outstanding students will receive a certificate signed by Wynton Marsalis and Phil Schaap.
·After Jazz Fell From the Pop Charts: The Music Since 1950 with Phil Schaap (Mondays, Apr 14-May 12, 2008; No class on Apr 21; 6:30-8:30 p.m.): A course that will trace the evolutions of cool, hard bop, modal and free jazz as they came out of the language of bebop and the development of third stream (the meeting of jazz and classical) and fusion (the marriage of jazz and rock).
