Alexa Weber Morales live at Yoshi's, tonight, with Wayne Wallace

Special concert, tonight, Oct 9, at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, celebrating 10 years of the Jazzschool!

I just wanted to let you know about this great concert tonight, a benefit and celebration for the marvelous Jazzschool in Berkeley founded by pianist Susan Muscarella. It's at 7:30 pm and features:

--Madeline Eastman with the Randy Porter Trio, Wayne Wallace and Rhythm and Rhyme ("I'll singing lead and doubling horn lines, as well as dancing like a maniac", says the séduisant chanteuse Alexa Weber Morales), Mark Levine and the Latin Tinge (he's a living encyclopedia of latin jazz and a marvelous Grammy-nominated pianist who has recorded on Moacir Santos' "Saudade" album for Blue Note), and Marcos Silva & Intersection (groovy, funky Brazilian jazz by Flora Purim's longtime keyboardist/arranger)

Btw, Yoshi's opened an even larger branch in San Francisco's Fillmore quarter, as Jesse Hamlin reports ( San Francisco Chronicle ). The nightclub seats 420 and a Japanese restaurant another 370 customers. Roy Haynes, Gary Burton, Kenny Garrett and Ravi Coltrane will play the first jazz notes at the club's opening in late November. San Franciscan's don't necessarily like crossing the bridge to come to Oakland, thus the owners hope for a large audience in the city, says Kaz Kajimura who founded Yoshi's about 30 years ago together with his wife Yoshi Akiba. The acoustics have been important in the planning of the club, and there are no places with bad views. Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter and Gonzalo Rubalcaba have already been booked for next year.
