Zoe Rahman interviewed

The pianist Zoe Rahman thinks that instrumental music isn't recognized as much as vocal music these days, reports Miriam Craig ( Barnet & Potters Bar Times ). She also knows that she is an exception in a man's world. She mostly plays with men, and she is only rarely interviewed by women. Many think her to be a singer because it doesn't fit their stereotype of a woman to see her as an instrumentalist and composer. Sound engineers have put a microphone up for her and asked: Where do you want to stand?, and she had to explain: No, I'm the pianist. Rahman who grew up in Chichester studied in London and Oxford before taking lessons with JoAnne Brackeen at the Berklee College in Boston. In her newest album she explores her Asian roots by playing Bengali music together with her brother, the saxophonist Idris Rahman.
