The world of Andy Bey

Andy Bey takes his repertoire from the most different sources, as Andrew Gilbert reports ( San Francisco Chronicle ). He can segue easily from jazz standards into songs by Sting, Milton Nascimento or Big Bill Broonzy. In the 60s he concentrated mostly on the piano. Even when he performs as a soloist he sees his voice always responding to a rhythm section, the piano. In the 50s he performed in popular TV shows, was celebrated in Paris with Andy and the Bey Sisters. His career foundered for decades until it took up steam after the release of his 1996 album "Ballad Blues and Bey". At first he never thought so much about technical aspects of singing, but over time he got to know the different nuances of his voice so well that today he works on specific things. His voice radiates honesty and soul, an impression supported by the fact that he is one of the few openly gay jazz musicians and talks openly about his HIV infection.
