R.I.P: Art Davis

The renowned bassist Art Davis died from a heart attack July 29th at his home in Long Beach, California, at the age of 73. After a classical education Davis in the 50s and 60s played with jazz musicians such as Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane, but also with popular stars such as Judy Garland, Bob Dylan, Harry Belafonte or James Brown. In the 70s he sued the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, claiming the orchestra discriminated against him when it failed to offer him a full-time position. In 1982 he received a doctorate in psychology and worked in a psychological practice. In 1986 he took up his instrument again, toured and recorded with Herbie Hancock and Ravi Coltrane.
