Till Brönner, "entertainment jazzer"

The trumpeter Till Brönner tells Oliver Das Gupta how enthusiastic the Georgian audience is about jazz ( Süddeutsche Zeitung ). The Germans are a good audience as well, but sometimes they forget about the real value of the music. Considering that jazz is not played enough on the radio, he thinks that jazz musicians in Germany are pretty successful. It is great that popular jazz singers such as Michael Bublé or Roger Cicero get people interested in jazz, but Brönner thinks this is more of a temporary fashion. Pop musicians made use of jazz in recent years; the jazz musicians, though, seem to have lost a bit of their drive. He doesn't mind to be called "entertainment jazzer", and if people call him "pretty boy" he doesn't care either, as long as he does not have to style his music accordingly. His recent album with Thomas Quasthoff impressed the trumpeter who attests to the fact that the singer is a great improviser even without a rhythm section.
