This Month on Riverwalk Jazz

This month two broadcasts focus on giants of jazz piano from the 1930s and '40s—Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum. Two of today's most gifted jazz pianists, Dick Hyman and Shelly Berg, join The Jim Cullum Jazz Band to bring this classic swinging jazz to life. And, we celebrate the 100th birthday of jazz pioneer Benny Carter (1907-2003), a Riverwalk Jazz guest in 1992.

As a special bonus for Jazz Me News readers, we invite you to stream a new interview with Ed Berger, Associate Director of the Institue of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, and co-author of the definitive biography, Benny Carter, A Life in American Music.

7/5 Jumpin’ on the Black and Whites: The Magic Touch of Teddy Wilson
Known for his light touch on the keyboards, he was often referred to as the most important jazz pianist of the Swing Era. Teddy Wilson became a star playing with Benny Goodman and made history as one of the first black musicians to join a white band. Dick Hyman and Topsy Chapman join The Jim Cullum Jazz Band.

7/12 Harlem to Hollywood: The Music of Harold Arlen
Vocalists Nina Ferro, Carol Woods, and Becky Kilgore join The Jim Cullum Jazz Band to present the music of Harold Arlen, the composer of jazz standards “Stormy Weather” and “I’ve Got the World on a String.” Included are rare interview clips of Arlen speaking about his music.

7/19 Keyboard Wizard: The Genius of Art Tatum
Concord recording artist Shelly Berg and Broadway’s Vernel Bagneris join The Jim Cullum Jazz Band for an exploration of the music and life of jazz piano virtuoso Art Tatum, famous for his supersonic runs and risky improvisations.

7/26 Centennial Celebration for Benny Carter (pictured above)
Musicians called him “the King.” An architect of the Swing Era sound, Benny Carter talks about his life in music and performs live with The Jim Cullum Jazz Band. Also included, jazz writer Ed Berger talks about Benny's importance in jazz.

You're Invited to a "Sneak Preview" Video

We invite you to share a new video clip of The Jim Cullum Jazz Band featuring pianist Shelly Berg. They perform "Tea For Two" at the Tobin Center in San Antonio. The arrangement was inspired by a version recorded by Art Tatum in the 1930s and was presented as part of a "sneak preview" of a Riverwalk Jazz program broadcast the week of July 19—Keyboard Wizard: The Genius of Art Tatum. Here is the link to stream the clip.
