RIP: Danny Barcelona

Danny Barcelona died April 1st at the age of 77 of cancer in a home in San Gabriel, California. The drummer was born in Hawaii and started his career in 1948 in the band of the trombonist Trummy Young. In the 50s he led his own bands playing around Hawaii and Japan. From 1958 until the death of the trumpeter in 1971 he worked with Louis Armstrong's band with which he recorded more than 130 sessions. After Armstrong died Barcelona played in a Honolulu hotel, worked in a music shop and later gave drum lessons in Monterey Park, California, where he had moved in 1979.
