"What A Wonderful Bossa World" - Liner Notes & Booklet

Anna Ly & Marcio Correia: "What A Wonderful Bossa World"
Produced by Arnaldo DeSouteiro for JSR
Distributed by Sonhos & Sons

Liner Notes by Kiko Ferreira:

Liner Notes by Wilson Garzon:

What a wonderful bossa world, Oba-la-lá!

Rare London dates for legendary soul diva of Somebody Else’s Guy, Ain’t Nobody High Enough and Always There fame.

Born in North Carolina before later moving to New York, Jocelyn Brown came from a family where her grandmother, mother, two aunts and a cousin all sang.

Appearing initially as a soloist in church with various Brooklyn Gospel Choirs, Jocelyn’s recording career defines itself, having worked with many of the best soul, raregroove and disco artists, producers and musicians of our time including such stellar names as Luther Vandross, Bette Midler, John Lennon, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack, George Benson, Teddy Pendergrass, Culture Club, Masters At Work and many others.

Her unaccredited vocal hook for Snap's, I Got The Power, and her collaboration with Tod Terry on Keep On Jumpin' are just two of the countless examples of Jocelyn's voice being sampled across the genres, each time reinforcing her indelible impact on contemporary music.

After decades of shared ownership, the unmistakable voice of Jocelyn Brown has grown legendary, and the recent release of her first solo album, Unreleased, is a worthy testament to her gift. Don’t miss the opportunity to see one of soul music’s most inspirational singer’s perform live.

Quartet San Francisco
To Release "Whirled Chamber Music" CD
September 25,
A Follow-Up to Their
Grammy-Nominated "Latigo"

New CD Focuses on the Music of Raymond Scott
In Celebration of His Centennial

Quartet San Francisco's 2006 release Látigo, which gave passionate expression to the group's devotion to tango, was honored last December with two Grammy nominations in the Classical Crossover field, including "Best Album."

Their audacious new ViolinJazz Recordings CD Whirled Chamber Music ups the ante, presenting what violinist Jeremy Cohen calls "crossover music in its purest form." Due for release September 25, the new disc draws from a wide variety of indigenous American forms -- jazz, funk, rock, tango -- that are imaginatively crafted by Cohen for string quartet. The CD's title refers to the walls between genres coming down, with the Quartet offering, you might say, "a new whirled order."

Quartet San Francisco, established in 2001, consists of Cohen and Kayo Miki on violins, Emily Onderdonk (viola), and Joel Cohen (cello). The quartet's contemporary musical sensibilities combined with the sheer physical energy required to play these rich American styles of music provide fertile ground for the ensemble to present their unique version of World Music.

The repertoire on the new CD advances the crossover concept in stunning fashion. Seven of the tracks are by Raymond Scott (1908-1994), the iconoclastic composer, bandleader, inventor, and electronic music pioneer whose music was given its broadest exposure on Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes cartoons in the 1940s and '50s and whose centennial will be celebrated next year. "Scott's whimsical melodies and swinging rhythms are ideally suited to string players with appetites for color and character," notes Cohen.

Also included in the program are compositions by Chick Corea ("Spain"), David Grisman ("Dawg's Bull"), Duke Ellington ("The Mooche"), and Leonard Bernstein ("Gee Officer Krupke," from West Side Story). The Average White Band's "Pick Up the Pieces" is rendered with attitude to spare, as is the CD closer "What Is Hip?" by Tower of Power -- a statement of local pride from the Oakland-born-and-bred Cohen brothers.

"We feel passionate about this mixture of American genres," says Cohen, "and we perform each work from within the style in which it was conceived. The tradition of chamber music has taught us to play from our hearts with the highest playing standards we can apply. So when the music says swing, we swing. When the music says groove, we groove."

One thing Cohen has learned in his diverse musical experiences -- from studies with Itzhak Perlman to his two years with Forever Tango to recording sessions with Carlos Santana and John Williams -- is that "the walls between genres are in our heads. They don't really exist unless we place them there. Quartet San Francisco bridges the gap between the styles that divide us musically."

Like its predecessor Látigo, Whirled Chamber Music was recorded at Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio, CA by Leslie Ann Jones, who received a Grammy nomination for her contributions to Látigo (best engineered classical album).

The work of another American original, Jim Flora, is featured on the CD cover. His pulsating, riotously colorful illustrations adorned the album covers of many jazz and classical releases for Columbia and RCA Victor in the late 1940s and '50s. Flora's exuberant, genre-defying style is its own new whirled order.

New talent: Grace Kelly

Phil Woods presented his black leather cap to the 15-year old alto saxophonist Grace Kelly on stage last year, as Owen McNally reports in The Hartford Courant . He was enthusiastic about her interpretation of the standard "I'll Remember April". Never before had he presented one of his caps to an alto saxophonist, he said and adds: "Hooray for the future of jazz and the alto saxophone!" Kelly wears the cap for each of her gigs. She attends high school in Boston, but has already performed at Carnegie Hall and Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. She has won several prizes and recorded three CDs.

Whether she has faced any problems because of her name? No, most of her friends have no idea who the other Grace Kelly actually was. She had not been named after the actress, but was originally born as Grace Chung. Only when her mother married Robert Kelly, she received the new surname. Her mother always used to listen to Stan Getz for breakfast. All of this, though, has not done her any harm. She is a normal teenager, loves to go to the movies, to dance and has already had a boyfriend.

Barbara Dennerlein's September news

http://www.radiorur.de/rur/r

http://www.orgelpark.nl/pages/agenda/voorstelling/12439

Doppel-CD "Mozart No End" wurde neu aufgelegt

Nach "Change Of Pace" also geht es quasi 'back to the roots' - die Doppel-CD ist ab sofort wieder erhältlich.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enthusiastic fans celebrate USA tour

"It was fantastic!" This is how Barbara puts her USA tour impressions into words. After having travelled five cities within two weeks she began to write down kind of a short diary on the flight back to Munich.

The concerts have been very successful and enormously receipted by the audience.

Philadelphia: The Verizon Hall of the Kimmel Center is a wonderful concert hall for approx. 2500 people and has one of the biggest concert organs in the USA. It is a fantastic, impressive instrument with unbelievable richness in sounds that seems to have been made for Barbara's diversified compositions.

One visitor was so impressed that in an internet blog immediately after the show he recommended:
"She'll be at Joe's Pub in NYC in a duo format tomorrow night, so what are you waiting for?"

New York: Joe's Pub has developed to a very popular jazz club since it has been established about ten years ago. It was the ideal venue for Barbara's first Hammond concert on her tour. The concert has been supported by the German Consulate General in New York. Barbara played a wonderful white Hammond chop (with MIDI pedals) from The Hammond Store USA and was assisted by the great Scott Neumann on drums. Among the audience were the jazz guitar players Russ Spiegel, member of Barbara's 'Bebab' band in Europe for many years, and Ronnie Jordan.

The concert and an interview were recorded for "Hammond Heroes", a documentary film project about the Hammond organ and its famous players.
http://www.hammondheroes.com

The next days Barbara had time to give interviews for CNN Headline News and to Pete Fallico’s "The Doodlin' Lounge" radio programme on KCSM in San Mateo and KUSP in Santa Cruz. You can listen to that radio interview if you follow this link:
http://www.bebab-jazz.de/doodlinlounge/

San Jose: The San Jose Jazz Festival is a three days lasting event on many stages in the city's festival zone. Barbara's concert was recorded by KCSM radio station San Mateo and will be broadcasted on October 21st. Together with her sidemen Brian Pardo on guitar and Paul Van Wageningen on drums Barbara celebrated a firework of swinging jazz and was as happy as the audience, people who wrote comments in blogs, Barbara's website guestbook and e-mails:

San Diego: The biggest open air pipe organ in Bilboa Park waited for Barbara's top tour final. She had flown to San Diego between her concerts in Berkeley and San Jose to rehearse and registrate for her concert. Barbara played in front of 1600 people a long two set concert. It was the first complete jazz concert on this 1914 built organ at all. The audience was enthused by this rare concert event and pleased Barbara with rich applause after the bass pedal solos, loud "bravo!" shouts between the titles and standing ovations at the end. After the concert the organ technician who recorded the concert via MIDI came to Barbara and told her amazed that she had played 86,457 notes in her second set - which sets a new mark instead of the previous "record" of classical organist Olivier Latry with about 30,000 notes.

"Barbara was impressed by fans that came three times to her concerts in Berkeley, San Jose and San Diego (which is a 1500 km round trip).

CD "Change Of Pace" now released in Switzerland

We are sorry about the delayed CD release in Switzerland. "Change of Pace" with Barbara Dennerlein and the 'Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz' is now available. Release date was August 24th.

"Mozart No End" re-issued on CD and DVD

This is a hot tip for Barbara Dennerlein fans who have already collected almost all of her albums: Friedrich Gulda's superb "Mozart No End" that had been sold out for many years in both CD and LaserDisc formats is now beeing reissued by Sony Classical and it's also available on DVD!!! You can hear Barbara Dennerlein in duo, sextet and orchestra line-ups together with the "enfant terrible" of classical music, Friedrich Gulda, who died in 2000.

Barbara Dennerlein is happy that these recordings are available again. Between 1989 and 1995 Barbara played numerous concerts together with the great pianist who loved both classical music – especially Mozart - and jazz. Barbara says: "I have learnt from Friedrich Gulda that classical and jazz music can be put together in a wonderful way, though they differ so much in their approach to music as an art and in the way of playing them. Since then it has been a dream for me to merge these two worlds together in my own compositions. Thus, my collaboration with Friedrich Gulda is one of the roots of the 'Change Of Pace' project."

Interview on AllAboutJazz.com website

www.AllAboutJazz.com is actually featuring Barbara Dennerlein with an interview in English. Germany-based AAJ correspondent Alan Bryson spoke with Dennerlein at length about her career, the challenges she's faced and the people she's had the good fortune to meet and play with over the years.

German Radio interview

Another interview that has been recorded during the jazz days in Dueren will be broadcasted by "Radio Rur" on September 8th as part of the "Planet Jazz" radio show (9 p.m. - 10 p.m.).

Harvest concert tour

In the second half of September Barbara will start her 2007 harvest tour. 24 concerts within 10 weeks are already scheduled. Barbara will mainly tour through Germany but she will also visit the Netherlands, Italy and Austria.

Julien Lourau's new projects

The saxophonist Julien Lourau gets a carte blanche for his concert at the festival Jazz à la Villette, as Dominique Queillé reports in Libération and Vincent Fertey in Le Figaro . He plays besides Wayne Shorter whom he loves as a saxophonist but also as a composer, and Steve Coleman whom he knows since his M-Base days. Lourau presents three projects during the festival: his new collaboration with the DJ Jeff Sharel which is kind of an homage to Chicago house music of the 90s; an Afro-Cuban project named Rumbabierta in which he is joined by the flutist Orlando Maraca Valle; and with his longtime friend Laurent Coq in the quartet Saigon, a project they developed last year, first in Haiti, then in Vietnam.

Kahlil Kwame Bell returns to Gillespie Auditorium tonight!

Join us for another exciting jazz evening this Tuesday evening, September 4 at the John Birks Gillespie Auditorium in the New York City Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway), when Kahlil Kwame Bell returns with his group. There will be 2 shows at 8:00 and 9:30 p.m.

Kahlil Kwame Bell has been called one of the most prolific musicians in the industry today. His career began at a mere two years of age when his father and uncle introduced him to West African drumming of the Ancient Mali Empire. He furthered his study of drumming at Bloomingdale House of Music at age ten. By the age of fifteen, he enrolled at the Harlem School of the Arts. Upon his arrival, he received his first job assisting dance movement classes where he worked for two years. He graduated from Rice High School and attended the State University of New York College at Old Westbury, where he assisted classes for Alfrida Derby, a dancer who was part of the original Olatunji Drum and Dance Company.

After graduating with his B.A. in Communicative and Creative Arts in May, 1990, he returned to the Harlem School of the Arts to teach. During his six year tenure, he found time to perform, record and accompany jazz greats such as Ron Carter, Roy Hargrove and Baba Olatunji, just to name a few. The Summer of 1996, Kahlil substituted for renown percussionist, Don Alias, while he was touring with David Sanborn. He has pIayed percussion for R/B artist, Erykah Badu during the European leg of her tour.

In addition, Kahlil has worked with the legendary Roberta Flack, which allowed him the opportunity to work with other music legends including Peabo Bryson, James Ingram, Ashford and Simpson and Luther Vandross. To date, Kahlil has traveled the world extensively doing what he loves and does best. He has recorded over 50 recordings including his own CD entitled, “Gift of Forgiveness,” which was released in February, 2001. He is credited for composing all of the music on his CD.

Admission is 15.00, 10.00 for students.

Tickets will be sold at the door, or call 212-222-5159 for reservations and information.

Mesma atitude sabiamente adotada no tema-título de “Wild is the wind” (Dimitri Tiomkin & Ned Washington), valseado de modo altamente elegante.

Tão chique quanto a leitura de piano & voz para “The bad and the beautiful” (David “Laura” Raksin & Dory Previn).

Tela brasileira

"O Passarinho", Part 1 - "Brother and Sister"

Hoje, me limitarei aos créditos do álbum "Brother and Sister", sem o qual nada disso estaria acontecido.

The first message posted in September couldn’t be other than a comment about my happiness & joy regarding the fact that my song “O Passarinho” (originally written for the superband Gazzara album “Brother and Sister”) became a hit in this European summer. After “Love Needs Time”, the first single from the CD, the track “O Passarinho” was chosen as the second single, released in late July. But even before the issue of the excellent remixes by top German DJ Tom Novy, the original version was receiving heavy airplay and also became a dancefloor hit, appearing in many charts all over Europe. Now, it really boomed!

I can already say that “O Passarinho” is, up to now, Arnaldo DeSouteiro’s biggest hit as a composer, far more sucessful than any of my previous efforts as a lyricist. After all, the lyrics I co-wrote with Paulo Malaguti for Dave Brubeck’s “Broadway Bossa Nova”, was recorded twice by Ithamara Koorax for the albums “Bossa Nova King Best Box” (1996) and “Bossa Nova Meets Drum ‘n’ Bass” (1998). Both were approved by my longtime dear friend Dave Brubeck, and became very successful in Japan, where Ithamara’s recordings of the tune remain being included in several compilations through the yaers.

In the 2006 summer, “Samba da Copa” (lyrics written by Arnaldo DeSouteiro for a theme by Fabio Fonseca and Pedro Leão) almost became a hit in Europe. Almost...!Included on the “A Trip to Brazil Vol.5: Copa do Mundo 2006” compilation, which I had produced for Universal, it received a lot of airplay, mainly in Germany, but also in Austria, England, Switzerland and Italy. “Samba da Copa” began to appear in the setlist of many famous DJs and could have become a big dancefloor hit if the Brazilian soccer team had done a better “performance”. Although I remain very proud of that compilation for its artistic content, it didn’t achieve the huge sales that the label had anticipated. Blame it on the Brazilian fiasco in the 2006 World Cup.

Anyway, I keep good hopes for “Samba da Copa”, since it will be included on Fabio Fonseca Trio’s upcoming album “Opus Samba”, already mentioned on Billboard.

Back to “O Passarinho”. It’s essential to tell how important was the fact that it was selected for the soundtrack of “La Pupa e il Secchione”, the most popular reality show on the Italian TV – it’s the Italian “Big Brother”, created by the same Endemol company. Soon I’ll be posting more details about the show, but you can find anything about it Googling and checking the YouTube. It’s also worth to mention that “O Passarinho” was included in the soundtrack on its original version, which I co-produced with Gazzara.

After the big “help” of having the song included in the “La Pupa e il Secchione” soundtrack, released on CD as well as on a special issue inserted in a magazine about the reality show, “O Passarinho” has been selected for several best-selling compilations. In the last two months, both the original and the remixed versions, have appeared in such albums as “Big Sur: Formentera”, “Club Pineta: 50th Anniversary”, “Suave – Obsesión Latina”and “Bossa na Praia”, available all over Europe, as well as in the American and Asian markets (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China). And there are many more scheduled for release in the next months. All will be detailed here in a soon future, but for today I am including below the credits from Gazzara’s album “Brother and Sister”, the one that started all this success.
