Celebrating 50 years of Deodato's "Impulso" with a new CD reissue in Japan
Produced by Deodato & Arnaldo DeSouteiro, this CD includes 4 bonus tracks: new digital mixes of "Samba de Verão," "Muito À Vontade," "Ainda Mais Lindo" and "Diz Que Fui Por Aí," all remixed & remastered @ Sound Way Studios, in Los Angeles. Like the title of track #8 says: Cheers!
"Samba Nova Concepção" also re-appears on CD
Bomba Records is also reissuing the all-star session "Samba Nova Concepção," arranged by the late (and phenomenal) Brazilian guitarist Neco (Daudeth de Azevedo), with whom I had the honor to work for the first time in 1998, when I was producing the all-star project "Street Angels" for the London-based label Mr. Bongo.
At that time, I had the chance to give to him some copies of the first CD reissues that were coming out in Europe of "Samba Nova Concepção" and some other Deodato's sessions on which he played ("Impulso!" and "Tremendão") before being replaced by Geraldo Vespar for the third Catedraticos' album ("Ataque.") Besides a great artist, Neco was a very kind and humble person, a true gentleman, and was very pleased to sign all the CDs to me.
Eumir Deodato plays acoustic piano (there's no organ at all) in 10 tracks of "Samba Nova Concepção," being replaced in 2 tunes by the late Tenório Jr. The CD reissue was co-produced by Deodato and Arnaldo DeSouteiro in Los Angeles.

Eumir Deodato's "Os Catedráticos 73" is also once again available in Japan
Another groundbreaking album by Deodato, "Os Catedráticos 73," the last one he did using the band name Os Catedráticos, was also recently reissued in Japan by Bomba Records. Actually, it was recorded for the Rio-based Equipe label in 1972, but released in Brazil and Japan only in 1973 after Deodato's version of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (2001) exploded in the airwaves and became a mega-hit all over the world.
This CD reissue, produced by Eumir Deodato & Arnaldo DeSouteiro, was remastered in LA from the original master tapes. Sergio Barroso is featured playing that stunning electric bass line of the opening track, the original version of "Skyscrapers," a tune that Deodato would record once again in NY for inclusion on the "Deodato 2" album for CTI. The closing theme is the first recording ever of "Carly & Carole," re-recorded a few months later for the million-selling and Grammy award winner "Prelude."

Box Set CD of the Month - "Miles At The Fillmore"
Box Set CD of the Month
Miles Davis: "Miles At The Fillmore" 2014 (Columbia) 1970/2014
Released in March 26, 2014. Lightning in a bottle! 4 CDs of unedited, primarily unreleased music including 2+ hours of extended material & rarities. A massive moment for Miles Davis -- legendary live performances at both the Fillmore East (from June 17 to 20, 1970) and Fillmore West (April 11, 1970), during the early days of fusion (then called jazz-rock) -- presented here in their entirety for the first time ever!
Part of the record features Miles' work that appeared in Teo Macero-edited form on the "Miles Davis At Fillmore" 2-LP set (Columbia G 30038), released on October 28, 1970 -- but issued here without the Teo's edits, so that you can really hear the group take off in unbridled, Bitches Brew-like energy -- served up by a lineup that includes Steve Grossman on tenor and soprano sax, Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes, Keith Jarrett on organ, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion and wooden flutes.
The set then also includes material recorded on April 11, 1970 at the Fillmore West – but all unissued tracks, and not the material that was on the "Black Beauty" album at all. These tracks feature a similar lineup, but without Keith Jarrett, on a few long tracks. The set separates out all the tunes with great clarity and better mastering than before, adding nothing less than 100 minutes to the Fillmore East set. Titles include "Directions", "The Mask", "It's About That Time", "Bitches Brew", "Spanish Key", "Sanctuary", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Footprints", "Paraphernalia", "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down", "Willie Nelson", and "The Theme".
Featuring: Miles Davis, trumpet; Steve Grossman, tenor sax, soprano sax; Chick Corea, electric piano (left channel); Keith Jarrett, organ, tambourine (right channel); Dave Holland, electric bass; Jack DeJohnette, drums; Airto Moreira, percussion, wood flutes, vocal effects.
Original Sessions Produced by Teo Macero

A killer set by Randy Brecker, paying tribute to the legendary fusion band The Brecker Brothers that he co-led with the much missed sax genius Michael Brecker. After the European release, we now have a domestic U.S. issue keeping the deluxe packaging with a beautiful gatefold cover.
Disc 1 is a Studio CD recorded in September 2011 with 11 tracks, featuring special guests like David Sanborn, Dean Brown, Adam Rogers, Jim Campagnola and Chris Minh Doky. The most haunting tune is "Elegy For Mike," with Randy's wife Ada Rovatti on soprano sax.
On two tracks - "Adina," dedicated to Ava, and "Stellina," dedicated to their daughter Stella --, Randy plays flugelhorn, while rapping under the nickname Randroid on two songs: "Really In For It" and "On The Rise." He also sings on the surprising lament "Musician's Ol' Lady Dues Blues," backed only by Adam Rogers on guitars.
Disc 2 founds Randy, Ada and the rhythm gang (bassist Will Lee, guitar ace Mike Stern, virtuoso drummer Dave Weckl, keyboardist & producer George Whitty plus special guest singer/keyboardist Oli Rockberger) smokin' @ the NYC Blue Note (date not mentioned on the booklet). Anyway, it's a splendid performance with 6 tunes also available on the studio versions (opening with the fiery "First Tune Of The Set," then "The Slag," the latin-tinged "Adina," "Really In For It," "Stellina," "Merry Go Town") but all sound even better on the live date.
The band also plays three Brecker Brothers classics: "Inside Out" (from "Heavy Metal Be-Bop"), the title track from "Straphangin'" and another theme from "Heavy Metal Be-Bop," the fusion anthem "Some Skunk Funk" played as the encore, "as fast as humanly possible," like Randy announces. In all aspects, Ada leaves a strong impression, displaying her personal style without feeling intimidated by the not easy task of "replacing" Michael Brecker. Instead of trying to emulate him, she does it her way and succeeds brilliantly.
The Brecker-Rovatti interplay is amazing, with the couple often making good use of electronic devices applied to their horns. The interaction between the other band members is equally flawless, and all the solos are full of magic, passion and complete control of technique.
Randy dedicates the project not only to Michael Brecker but also to other musicians who played with the band in the 70s and 80s and already left Earth too soon: Hiram Bullock, Don Alias, Ralph MacDonald, Luther Vandross and "honorary Brecker Brother, our mentor" Barry Rogers.
Vinyl Reissue of the Month - "Freddie Hubbard: Red Clay"
Vinyl Reissue of the Month
Freddie Hubbard: "Red Clay" (CTI/ORG Music) 2-LP set
Rating: ***** (musical performance and remastering)
Produced by Creed Taylor
Recorded & Mixed by Rudy Van Gelder
Remastered by Bernie Grundman
Recorded January 27, 28 & 29, 1970, at Van Gelder Studios (Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey)
Cover photo by Price Givens
Album Design by Tony Lane
Featuring: Freddie Hubbard (trumpet & flugelhorn), Joe Henderson (tenor sax & flute), Herbie Hancock (Fender Rhodes electric piano & Hammond organ), Ron Carter (electric bass) & Lenny White (drums)
Mastered from the original tapes at 45rpm by Bernie Grundman and pressed on 180 gram audiophile-grade vinyl at Pallas in Germany, the original 33rpm single-LP becomes a 2-LP set and THE essential audiophile pressing of Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay!"
As the label’s first release, "Red Clay" established the soul-jazz-funk template Creed Taylor’s CTI imprint would follow for the next decade. Joined by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Lenny White, Freddie Hubbard lays down bluesy hard-bop epiphanies, turning in one of his most memorable albums as a leader; my very favorite one remains "First Light," to be reissued on a limited numbered audiophile LP by ORG next month.
In addition to standing as a career-defining affair, the landmark 1970 effort also marks Hubbard's break from his Blue Note era and signals the fusion-minded direction he and other players would further investigate in the years to come.
"Red Clay" includes four great tunes composed by Hubbard: Besides the title track, which became a contemporary jazz standard, includes three other gems: "Delphia" (a gorgeous ballad dedicated to his mother, with Herbie moving to organ and Henderson playing flute), "Suite Sioux" and the explosive hard-bop "The Intrepid Fox."
Credit ORG Music for reaching beyond the 50s and 60s and beginning to mine the rich well of the 1970s for jazz treasures that give us audiophile enjoyment.

The Klaxon Mutant Allstars play music that is playful, haunting, and exuberant, inhabiting the new musical terrain between jazz, electronica, pop, and indie rock. The Klaxons’ music is meticulously crafted and presented with joyful virtuosity, blurring the lines between composition and improvisation, acoustic and electronic, and between individual musical personalities and the lush, intoxicating sound of the whole.
This show will be the CD release of "Robot Invasion," Klaxon Mutant Allstars’ intriguing and highly creative debut album. This recording is a product of the current generation of eclectic-minded jazz musicians living in the Bay Area’s technology-obsessed, genre-twisting, multi-cultural mix. With inspiration drawn from everything from 1980s hip hop, to underdog baseball heroes, to the writings of David Sedaris, to California politics, plus one cover of the band Deerhoof, the Klaxons have created an album that, like their Bay Area home, is multi-pronged in its influences, vital in its relevance, and boldly points to the future.

DUENDE is a collaboration between Chef Paul Canales and impresario Rocco Somazzi, born from a common passion for creative soulful food, artisanal wines, beers and spirits and eclectic improvised music and art. "Our performances take place in a dedicated room, and our stage is not visible from our bar & dining room, " Somazzi says. "This provides a more focused listening environment. If you're planning to dine with us please allow enough time to eat before showtime."

CD Reissue of the Month
José Briamonte: "Briamonte Orchestra" (Elenco/Think! Records Japan) 1970/2014
A long-forgotten album by Brazilian composer, arranger and conductor José Briamonte, has just been rediscovered in Japan. The highlights are Briamonte's originals "O Embalo do Pato," "Zip", "Rota Sul," "Caos," "Atmosfera" and the delightful opening track, "Tema de Cristina," a radio hit due to its inclusion in the soundtrack of the soap opera "Pigmalião 70".
But there are also nice renditions of such international pop hits as Burt Bacharach's "What The World Needs Now," Alfred Newman's sensual & sumptous "Airport Love Theme," and Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'" that became a global hit thanks to singer Harry Nilsson.

Mindi Abair live in Florida, tonight!
Don't miss Mindi Abair live, tonight, April 29th, at Jazziz Nightlife (201 Plaza Real in Mizner Park) in Boca Raton, Florida.
Go to http://www.jazziz.com/event/mindi-abair/ for tickets!
Mindi Abair was playing in the band on American Idol when Steven Tyler stopped the show to ask the contestant "Who is your sax player?" But that's not entirely surprising: Abair is the kind of artist who commands instant attention. A triple-threat singer, saxophonist and songwriter, she's recorded no less than 10 No. 1 singles, sold a half million records and repeatedly topped the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts. After catching Tyler's attention, she wound up touring with Aerosmith for two years, while also making time to play with Bruce Springsteen and jam with Paul Shaffer and the Late Show with David Letterman band. Now she comes to JAZZIZ Nightlife for a memorable and intimate concert.
She will be performing songs from her upcoming CD release, "Wild Heart," as well as tunes from her previous albums.

News from Quincy Jones' documentary movie about Clark Terry, "Keep On Keepin' On"
Q: "I could not be more excited to announce that The Weinstein Company / RadiusTWC have acquired our documentary "Keep On Keepin' On." Harvey and I have been friends for many years and we have been waiting for the right opportunity to join forces. Harvey has always been a champion of the arts and the fact that he recognized the importance of Clark Terry's contributions to American culture warms my heart.
There's nothing better than the right people coming together at the right time - something I should thank my longtime family Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, and the Tribeca Film Festival team for. To know that a film about my first teacher Clark Terry – the man who put me on his shoulders more than seventy years ago – will get the chance to be seen by a wider audience makes my soul smile."

Instrumental Jazz CD of the Month - "Mark Little Trio: Kindred Spirits"
Instrumental Jazz CD of the Month
Mark Little Trio: "Kindred Spirits" (Caralittle Music) 2014
Rating:
***** (musical performance)
**** (sonic quality)
Produced & Arranged by Mark Little
Co-Produced by Robert De La Garza
Recorded @ Windmill Valley Recording (Bulverde, Texas)
Recorded & Mixed by Robert De La Garza
Mastered by Jerry Tubb @ Terra Nova Digital Audio, Inc. (Austin, TX)
A phenomenal session led by pianist Mark Little, with superlative contributions by Mike Porter (acoustic bass) and Daniel Dowling (drums). Top-class repertoire, alternating inspired renditions of jazz standards with mesmerizing originals ("Rrose Amarillo," "Anthem Jazz," "Sturdy Man" and the title track "Kindred Spirits") plus some classical pieces. The famous Adagio from Beethoven's "Pathetique Sonata" and J.S. Bach's "Air On The G String" (also a favorite of Milcho Leviev, who had recorded it as "Air On A Blue String," a track I gave lots of airplay when working for TUPI-FM radio station ages ago) are both played as jazz ballads.
A third classical work, Chopin's "Prelude In E Minor, Op. 28, No.4" appears mixed with Antonio Carlos Jobim's "How Insensitive," the bossa nova classic inspired by the Prelude. There's another gorgeous bossa, "Caminhos Cruzados," co-written by Jobim and Newton Mendonça, and made internationally famous through João Gilberto's masterpiece album with Claus Ogerman, "Amoroso."
Nevertheless, the CD highlights are the audacious, daring and highly creative treatments provided by the Mark Little Trio to Bill Evans' gem "Time Remembered" (btw, he studied with Evans and combines the master's lyricism with a powerful touch a la McCoy Tyner), an 8-minute version of "Come Rain Or Come Shine" (excellent bass solo, astonishing drumwork), "You Don't Know What Love Is" (simply superb!), "Tenderly" and Charlie Parker's bop anthem "Relaxin' At Camarillo". The musicians' interplay is impeccable throughout the album; the dense and intense approach provided by the leader is impressive. His "inner voice" speaks eloquently and clear. What else could we ask for? So far, one of the best releases of the year.
*********
Mark was born August 28, 1951 in Amarillo, Texas. He began piano lessons at four, and played his first professional gig at six. He joined an R & B group “The Undertakers” at 14, touring with them for four years. Mark moved to Austin in 1970, and played with numerous groups including Willie Nelson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Willis Allen Ramsey & Jerry Jeff Walker. He received a scholarship from Berklee School of Music where he got the chance to study with Bill Evans. Little adds that studying with Bill Evans was a “once in a lifetime incredible experience”. He (Bill Evans) talked extensively about developing the “inner voice’s” of the piano and sited Mozart as an example of this technique. By 1975, Mark was teaching at Berklee.
In 1980, Mark moved to California and got the job playing piano for Cleo Lane and John Dankworth, performing with them at many venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles and Royal Albert Hall in London.
He composed and arranged for Bobby McFerrin, as well as performing with him at the Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles. He toured the United States and Europe with Maria Muldaur, working at Fat Tuesday’s in New York City and Ronnie Scott’s in London, among other places. On tour with Art Farmer and Clifford Jordan, Mark played the hottest clubs on the West Coast including Yoshi’s in San Francisco.
He “tenured” as the musical director and pianist for E.W. Wainwrights African Roots of Jazz. During which time he did special “command performances” for Nelson Mandela , Danny Glover and Louis Farrakhan .
Mark has worked with many great jazz artists, including Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Sanders, Grady Tate, Eddie Henderson, Morgana King, Joe Lovano, Ted Curson, Shorty Rogers, Chico Freeman , Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Allen, Ryo Kawasaki, Don Moye, Morganna King, Bud Shank, and Melba Moore.
He recorded his first album as a leader, “Dreamwalk’n” in 1993 on the Monarch label and received his first Grammy nomination. Little’s second CD, “The Tribe” was recorded in 1995 again for Monarch, and gave Little his second Grammy nomination. His third CD, “Birthright,” was a solo live performance at the famous Maybeck Recital Hall released in 1999.
Little’s 2003 CD, “Isn’t Art It!” released on his own label “Caralittle Music” is all original compositions dedicated to the life and work of his brother Ken Little which demonstrates Mark’s versatility of styles and creativity.
Mark moved to San Antonio in 2004 and has played with numerous groups including his brother Ken Little’s band, Richie Cole’s Alto Madness orchestra and Kyle Kyner’s Small World with Polly Harrison and Richard Oppenheim. A new chapter starts now with "Kindred Spirits".
In the words of Mark’s old friend the late, great, John Dankworth, “Mark Little’s spirited playing amply demonstrates his total immersion in the music he loves, not to mention his wholehearted commitment to it. His fluent improvisations explore ever-changing routes with a surprise around nearly every corner; they sometimes display extraordinary virtuosity and sometimes almost disarming simplicity, yet are never devoid of interest. He shows himself to be an exciting performer whose work is still developing; this bodes well for the future of this highly individual artiste.”

R.I.P.: Armando Peraza
One of the greatest percussionists in the history of music. A GIANT! From George Shearing to Carlos Santana, from jazz to rock, pop & beyond.
His performances on Santana's most-oriented fusion albums like "Borboletta", "Illuminations" (alongside Alice Coltrane, Dave Holland & Jack DeJohnette), "Welcome!" and "Lotus" are simply extraordinary. Not to mention several videos, LaserDiscs and DVDs like "Viva Santana!", full of several haunting moments from live concerts with Santana.
Despite such a monumental body of work, it's easy for me to say that my very favorite Peraza track is "Promisses Of A Fisherman," the celestial Dorival Caymmi tune that Carlos picked up for his 1974 "Borboletta" album (5 stars on page 16 of the December 5, 1974 issue of DownBeat magazine). Alongside Carlos on guitar, Tom Coster (Hammond & Fender Rhodes), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto (drums) and Flora Purim (vocals), Armando Peraza does the best bongos performance I've ever heard on a jazz-rock/fusion recording. Rest in Peace.

Armando Peraza, world-recognized drummer, dies at 89
By David Colker, Published: April 16
Cuban-born drummer Armando Peraza, a self-taught musician who transformed himself from a homeless orphan in Havana to a world-recognized bongo and conga expert and who performed with Carlos Santana for nearly two decades, died April 14 in a South San Francisco hospital.
The cause was pneumonia, said his wife, Josephine Peraza. Mr. Peraza had also battled diabetes for many years.
(Larry Hulst/Getty Images) - Armando Peraza circa 1970.
Officially, Mr. Peraza was 89, but he admitted that he made up a birth date to give to authorities when he came to the United States in the late 1940s and was never sure of his exact age.
Mr. Peraza, who also played with pianist George Shearing and other jazz greats, was known for combining a blindingly fast drumming technique with a flamboyant style that audiences loved.
Mr. Peraza was born, according to public records, in Havana on May 30, 1924, although his wife said it could have been as early as 1919. When Mr. Peraza was 3, his father died of pneumonia, and at the age of 7 he lost his mother to liver failure, according to a 2004 account in Latin Beat magazine. He stayed with relatives until he was 12 and then was out on his own, selling fruit and vegetables on the street.
“I was sleeping on the street,” Mr. Peraza told Latin Beat. “I grew up with a lot of violence.”
As he grew older, he played semipro baseball and taught himself to play drums. “I never had a chance to learn everything,” Mr. Perez told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2009. “In the streets, nobody showed us nothing.”
His break came when a baseball teammate’s brother, a singer with a pivotal group called Conjunto Kubavana, was in sudden need of a conga player and gave Mr. Peraza the chance to perform. He later played alongside percussionist Mongo Santamaria for a dance troupe known as the Black Diamonds. “A big specialty number would be a dance solo with Armando’s playing following the moves of the dancer,” said John Santos, a San Francisco bandleader who organized concerts in tribute to Mr. Peraza in recent years.
In the late 1940s, Mr. Peraza made his way to New York, but his flamboyant playing didn’t fit with Latin dance orchestras of the period. “The attention was supposed to be on the lead singers,” Santos said. “What he did overshadowed them.”
Instead, Mr. Peraza gravitated to jazz ensembles, joining groups headed by Shearing and multi-
instrumentalist Cal Tjader. Over the years, he also performed with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianists Dave Brubeck and Art Tatum, and saxophonist Charlie Parker, and eventually with pop music stars such as Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt and Eric Clapton.
His relationship with Santana began in the early 1970s. “He knew Carlos’ father before he knew Carlos,” Josephine Peraza said. Santana’s father, Jose, was a mariachi musician in San Francisco.
Among the Santana recordings on which Mr. Peraza played are “Caravanserai,” “Blues for Salvador” and “Freedom.” Mr. Peraza traveled extensively with Santana’s band until about 1990, when his diabetes made life on the road too difficult. He continued to perform on recordings, including Linda Ronstadt’s 1992 “Frenesi” Spanish-language album, and at occasional concerts.
Besides his wife, Mr. Peraza is survived by a daughter and three grandchildren.

R.I.P.: Ralph Penland
(born February 15, 1953 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; died on March 14, 2014 in Los Angeles, California, USA)
I first listened to drummer Ralph Penland on Freddie Hubbard's "Keep Your Soul Together" album, recorded for CTI in 1973. It was the last of Hubbard's "official" studio LPs for Creed Taylor during their association in the early 70s (another album, "Polar AC," consisting of out-takes from previous sessions, was released after Freddie had already left CTI to sign with Columbia) and, ironically, the first that the trumpeter was allowed to record with his touring band, then consisting of George Cables, Kent Brinkley, Ralph Penland, Aurell Ray and Junior Cook.Penland and Hubbard kept a prolific collaboration during three decades, as documented on such albums as "High Energy" (recorded in 1974, reissued on CD in 2009) as well on the DVD "Live at the Warsaw Jamboree Jazz Festival," filmed in Poland (back in 1991) and released in 2004.
I also saw Penland as a member of Hubert Laws' group, and during the filming of Bruce Weber's haunting film about Chet Baker, "Let's Get Lost," when I met Lisa Marie, btw. Penland's work with singers like Dianne Reeves, Nancy Wilson, Carmen Lundy, Etta James and k.d. lang is also noteworthy. Rest in Peace!

Jazz Great, PCC Educator Ralph Penland Reported Dead at 61
Pasadena’s Prolific Penland Leaves Legacy, Mournful Fans
Prolific jazz drummer and Pasadena City College faculty member Ralph
Penland died in Los Angeles on March 14 at age 61, according to media
and social media reports.
The cause of his death has not been reported.
Penland’s performance credits is a “Who’s Who” list of jazz superstars: Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, George Benson, Stan Getz and dozens more top artists in the genre.
Penland was a faculty member in the Jazz Department at Pasadena City College and previously taught at the New England Conservatory, where he had studied originally.
Between 1973 and 2013, Penland performed in 100 recording sessions and most recently, led his own band, The Penland Polygon.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Penland purchased his first drum set at the age of 15 and just two years later was performing with renowned Jazz-Pop guitarist Wilbert Longmire and was a featured percussionist with The Cincinnati Symphony. Not long after, he moved to Boston where, still in his early twenties, he began teaching at The New England Conservatory of Music.
It was during this time, while commuting to New York, that Penland met and joined up with Freddie Hubbard, and the pair recorded five albums, two of which, “Keep Your Soul Together” and “High Energy” are considered ground-breaking works of jazz.
Upon news of his death, social media exploded with comments of both sadness and respect.
“Traveling mercies to our beautiful friend, drummer Ralph Penland who returned home to the great Creator,” fan Mary Bogue posted on Penland’s Facebook page. “You kept perfect time, such a gift to every singer; such a sweet, sweet gift. Peace be with you, our dear friend Ralph.”
Penlands commercial, pop, R&B and rock credits include performances with The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Jeffrey Osborne, Grover Washington, Jr., Benard Ighner, Eric Gale, Ali Woodson, Patrice Rushen, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Kirk Whalum, Everette Harp, Steve Vai, Brian Auger, Robben Ford, George Benson and Frank Sinatra.
Penlands’ film work and musical movie soundtracks include “Throw Momma From The Train”, “When Harry Met Sally”, “Cool World”, “The Russia House”, “Midnight In The Garden Of Good & Evil” and the HBO series “Politically Incorrect.”

Quincy Jones on Alfredo Rodriguez's performances in Los Angeles, last week
Quincy Jones reports: "My brother Alfredo Rodriguez had his album release party at the Blue Whale on Tuesday night and he and his trio absolutely KILLED it! So incredibly proud of where he has taken his music. Their performance is on another level. Congratulations my friend, my hat's off to you and your talent... xoxox - Q"
And we strongly recommend the 3D Blu-ray "Experince Montreux" (total time: 206 minutes), filmed in High Definition 3D and released last November. This 2-disc set brings together the award-winning "Experience Montreux" film plus concert performances by Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones (with Alfredo Rodriguez shining on an all-star band recruited by Q), all filmed at the 44th Montreux Jazz Festival in 2010.
The first disc contains full live tracks by a range of artists that reflects the breadth and eclecticism of the Montreux Fest, featuring Massive Attack, Joe Bonamassa, Elvis Costello, Angelique Kidjo and many others. Their performances are interspersed with interviews with festival founder Claude Nobs and many of the artists involved and are accompanied by stunning footage of the festival setting, the town of Montreux, Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps.
Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock have both been frequent visitors to Montreux over the years and it's fitting that their performances form a part of this 3D celebration of the magic of the Montreux Jazz Festival. The highlights on Quincy's set are provided by the young Cuban piano virtuoso Alfredo Rodriguez (a splendid musician who became Quincy's protégé and shines even playing Happy Birthday!!!) and veteran Brazilian percussion master Paulinho da Costa, a longtime associate of Quincy who has performed in 99% of his productions since the late 70s, including all his solo albums and the Michael Jackson classic trilogy "Off The Wall," "Triology" and "Bad." Hancock's band features bassist Tal Winkenfeld, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and an astonishingly beautiful vocalist named Kristina Train, who sings a creative rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine."
