The Great Hall of the Moscow Peter Ilitch Conservatory is one of the most famous concert venues not only in Moscow and Russia but in the world – thanks to its wonderful decoration, comfortable location and – which is the most important for the musicians – perfect acoustics.
It was opened on April 7, 1901.
The building was made under the project of architect V. Zagorsky. The Hall’s famous façade was a feature of the building previously staying there – a house of Russian princess Ekaterina Dashkova which was built on this place in the end of the 18th century.
A big part of the whole work – from the furniture and carpets to the organ of Paris «А. Cavaille-Coll» company (1899) presently staying in the Hall – was funded by Russian patrons of arts. The organ of the Hall was regarded as one of the best organ in the world during the Paris exhibition of 1900. Great Hall for Moscow is much bigger then a concert hall only. During the First World War (1915 – 1917) it was a hospital here, and in a period of 1924 – 1933 at daytime the Hall was used as a popular movie theatre.
Since 1940 the Conservatory was named after Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and in 1954 the monument to him was opened in front of the Great Hall.
The best soloists, orchestras and ensembles of the world play their concerts here. A number of international festival and competitions take place at the Great Hall, and among them there is the most famous in the world Tchaikovsky Competition. And it is considered as the most favorite hall in Moscow.
Now the Great Hall building is known as the Nikolay Rubinstein building (formerly the Fourth study building of the Moscow conservatory).

Дайана Кролл (Diana Krall) does two eagerly awaited concerts in Russia, tonight, November 28 at the Opera & Ballet Conservatory (Saint Petersburg), and next Monday, November 30, at the Moscow Conservatory. The deluxe 2-CD set of "Quiet Nights" was released in the Russian Federation on October 12, and the special edition of the "Live in Rio" DVD is coming out this week.

Hale Smith, a classical composer who also worked as a performer and arranger with jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Ahmad Jamal and Chico Hamilton, died Tuesday at his home in Freeport, L.I. He was 84.
The cause was complications of a stroke, said his wife, Juanita.
Mr. Smith, who wryly described himself to The New York Times in 1990 as “one of America’s most famous unknown composers,” straddled the two worlds of jazz and classical music as a performer, composer, arranger and teacher. From his early teens, he played jazz piano in the nightclubs of Cleveland, his hometown, but he went on to study classical composition and achieve a national reputation for an eclectic oeuvre and his synthesis of jazz and 12-tone technique.
He composed serial-influenced works like “Contours for Orchestra” (1961) and “Ritual and Incantations” (1974), lyrical works like the song cycle “The Valley Wind” (1952) and jingles and incidental music for radio, television and theater. With the drummer Chico Hamilton, he composed the film score for “Mr. Ricco” (1975), and his skill as an orchestrator led to a series of collaborations with the pianist Ahmad Jamal.
Mr. Smith was born on June 29, 1925, in Cleveland, where his father owned a printing shop. He began studying piano at 7 and played mellophone in his high school band. At 16, he showed enough talent as a composer to attract the interest of Duke Ellington, who, after being shown one of his compositions, sat down with him to offer advice.
After being drafted into the Army in 1943, he arranged the music for shows touring Army camps in Florida and Georgia. Mr. Smith, who was black, told The Times, “I served on the third front, the American South.”
On leaving the service in 1945 he enrolled in the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied composition with the serialist Marcel Dick and theory with Ward Lewis. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1950 and a master’s in 1952. That year his “Four Songs” won the music licensing organization BMI’s first student composer award.
In 1948 he married Juanita Hancock. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Robin, of Manhattan; three sons, Michael, of Freeport; Eric, of York, Pa.; and Marcel, of Harpursville, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Smith moved to New York in 1958 and found work as an editor and consultant at several music publishing houses. He also taught at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University, in Brookville, and at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, from which he retired in 1984.
Eclectic in his tastes and interests, Mr. Smith composed works that ranged from the richly dissonant orchestral composition “Innerflexions” (1977) to “Dialogues and Commentary” (1990-91), a witty set of variations for septet on a single motif. His arrangements of spirituals were performed often by the sopranos Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman.
In 2000, Composers Recordings released a survey of his work, “Music of Hale Smith.”
Although Mr. Smith, an adviser for the Center for Black Music Research in Chicago, was routinely listed among the leading black composers of his day, he bristled at the designation. He wanted his work, and that of his black peers, to appear on programs with that of Beethoven, Mozart and Copland.
“We don’t even have to be called black,” he wrote in an article in 1971. “When we stand for our bows, that fact will become clear when it should — after the music has made its own impact.”

In 1948 he married Juanita Hancock. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Robin, of Manhattan; three sons, Michael, of Freeport; Eric, of York, Pa.; and Marcel, of Harpursville, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Smith moved to New York in 1958 and found work as an editor and consultant at several music publishing houses. He also taught at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University, in Brookville, and at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, from which he retired in 1984.
Eclectic in his tastes and interests, Mr. Smith composed works that ranged from the richly dissonant orchestral composition “Innerflexions” (1977) to “Dialogues and Commentary” (1990-91), a witty set of variations for septet on a single motif. His arrangements of spirituals were performed often by the sopranos Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman.
In 2000, Composers Recordings released a survey of his work, “Music of Hale Smith.”
Although Mr. Smith, an adviser for the Center for Black Music Research in Chicago, was routinely listed among the leading black composers of his day, he bristled at the designation. He wanted his work, and that of his black peers, to appear on programs with that of Beethoven, Mozart and Copland.
“We don’t even have to be called black,” he wrote in an article in 1971. “When we stand for our bows, that fact will become clear when it should — after the music has made its own impact.”

Diana Krall live in Prague tonight!

Hudební svět ji označuje za „Sinatru v sukních“ a ve svém oboru má jen málo tak skvělých konkurentů.
Tato světoznámá kanadská umělkyně má na kontě nespočet vyprodaných koncertů, každé vydání nového alba je na hudebním poli obrovskou událostí.
Téměř za každé album byla Diana Krall nominována na prestižní cenu Grammy, 2x rovněž tuto cenu získala. V jejím žánru je součet výše jmenovaného opravdu velkou vzácností.
Na konci března vydala své zatím poslední album Quiet Nights, které je ovlivněno stylem bossa nova a baladami. Část z něj představila na konci února v předpremiéře v rámci speciálního koncertu, při příležitosti udělování Gershwinovy ceny Steviemu Wonderovi, coby jeho osobní host a zároveň host prezidenta USA Baracka Obamy, který Wonderovi cenu předával.

Diana alby Only Trust In Your Heart, poctou triu Nat King Colea All For You i romanticko-erotickou kolekcí Love Scenes okouzlovala skoro zázračným darem vdechnout znovu život starším jazzovým písničkám. Coby půvabná dívka hrající výtečně na piáno, zpívající živočišně i zadumaně zároveň, jako rozený muzikant, ale opravdově a přitom vzrušivě představila své verze jazzových standardů - Lépe než mnohé zavedené vokální specialistky. Nadšených ohlasů přibývalo. Půda byla připravena pro to, aby její producent Tommy LiPumma, mohl vsadit na sexy, jakoby lehounce nachlazený hlas a vypustit do světa téměř hollywoodsky pojatá alba When I Look In Your Eyes a The Look Of Love, čímž celý tým kolem Krall dosáhl na Grammy a především katapultoval zpěvačku do jiných souvislostí. Její skladby se objevily například v seriálu "Sex ve Městě" nebo ve filmu "Zahrada Dobra a Zla".
V roce 2002 získala znovu Grammy, když její album Live In Paris ocenili akademici v jazzové kategorii. CD potvrzuje její nejryzejší kvality, spočívající v navození nevšední atmosféry, ve které zvolna a po svém odkrývá krásu napůl zapomenutých, napůl obehraných šlágrů minulosti, které v jejím podání zní znovu současně. Hraje bravurně i oduševněle a stejně tak zpívá. S přibývajícími alby se jí daří talent jen rozvíjet, je přesvědčivější, barvitější a osobitější, než kdykoli předtím. Talent, cit a zkušenosti z víc než desetiletí mezi jazzovou smetánkou se asi sčítají, ne-li násobí. Je slyšet každá nuance a zároveň jednota, posluchače strhuje tah kapely a rytmus zpěvaččiných frází, obklopují nálady, jež Diana Krall tak lehce tvoří i proměňuje, když v puse převaluje a přebarvuje slova či jen slabiky.
Odvazuje se při strhujícím i "pouze" šlapajícím, radostném swingu, víc než přesvědčivě sní i teskní v baladách, zjevně ji těší perfektní spoluhráči, kteří s ní vysloveně žijí, a užívá si, že ji publikum miluje. Jedno z jejích posledních CD, které dostalo název The Girl In The Other Room je postaveno na poměrně osobitém "písničkářství" a v případě textů a vydařené balady Almost Blue i na umění zpěvaččina partnera Elvise Costella. Jádro tvořené vlastními kompozicemi vyšperkovala Diana Krall pod dohledem producenta Tommyho LiPumy podařenými verzemi písní Joni Mitchell (Black Crow), Mose Allisona (úvodní bluesová Stop This World) či Toma Waitse (Temptation). Muzikanty má Diana Krall kolem sebe jen ty nejlepší: u kontrabasu se střídají John Clayton a Christian McBride, za bicími Jeff Hamilton, jazzový chameleon Peter Erskine a Terri Lyne Carrington. Kytarista Anthony Wilson vkusně vyplňuje a dotváří atmosféru a kdykoliv má příležitost vyjádřit se sólově, vyždíme v rámci stylových mantinelů nástroj do maxima.
V březnu 2009 přichází kanadská pianistka a zpěvačka Diana Krall se svou studiovou novinkou, již dvanáctou v pořadí. Jedná se o intimní nahrávku balad a bossa nova skladeb od stejného teamu, který připravil Grammy oceněné album "The Look of Love". Dianu doprovází její kvartet a orchestr a mezi skladbami se objevuje taková klasika jako "The Boy from Ipanema" či "Walk on By".
Nové album "Quiet Nights" vydává i u nás Universal Music.

The CTI RVG SHM-CD Series out today!
Legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder (RVG) & the no less legendary producer Creed Taylor were pictured at Van Gelder Studio, in NJ, during the remastering sessions of the CTI albums that are being released today, November 26, in Japan, in the "CTI RVG SHM-CD Series" distributed by King Records.
The above shot (reproduced in all the OBI strips attached to this SHM-CD series) was done by another dear friend, the great NY-based Japanese photographer Takehiro Tokiwa, with whom Arnaldo DeSouteiro had the honor to work some years ago, when Tokiwa-san was invited to do the pics for the Asian issue of Paula Faour's debut album on JSR (Jazz Station Records), "Cool Bossa Struttin'."
For the very first time, 20 CTI titles from the 70s are being released on SHM-CD format (some of the albums from the 60s, from the A&M/CTI era, had appeared before, such as Wes Montgomery's best-selling "A Day In the Life").
AND, also for the first time ever, such albums were digitally remastered, in 2009!, by the man who recorded most of them during the CTI heyday in the early 70s, the wiz Van Gelder, under the direct supervision of Creed Taylor!!!
The liner notes were written by Arnaldo DeSouteiro, Ira Gitler, Leonard Feather, Toshio Handa, Shoich Yui and Masa Asanishi.
The booklets preserve the original LP artworks, done mostly by the unmatched team of Pete Turner (front cover photos) and Bob Ciano (album design).
All previous CTI CDs released in Japan in the past 25 years had been remastered at King Studios by such engineers as Seiji Kaneko and Kuniaki Takahashi, sometimes under Arnaldo DeSouteiro's supervision; and all the CTI CDs released in the USA and Europe by Sony had been remastered by experts like Tim Geelan and Mark Wilder, with whom DeSouteiro worked respectively in the first domestic releases of such titles as Deodato's "In Concert - Live at Felt Forum" and Jobim's "Stone Flower."
Btw, albums by both Deodato and Jobim are included in this new state-of-the-art SHM-CD series. And the liner notes for such new reissues of the masterpieces that these two Brazilian geniuses recorded for CTI are signed by Arnaldo DeSouteiro.

Egberto Gismonti: "Nó Caipira" (Carmo)
One of the many masterpieces recorded by Gismonti for the EMI/Odeon label in the 70s, "Nó Caipira" was never reissued on CD in Brazil, where it was recorded in 1979. The master tapes now belong to Gismonti himself and are part of the catalog of his independent Carmo label, distributed in Europe by ECM.
So, guess where I bought a copy yesterday? In Belgrade, Serbia, dear friends!
I'm not kidding. As soon as I walked into MAMUT, a three-floor store that is considered the best record shop of Belgrade, I knew I was going to find some precious things.
There was only one copy available of "Nó Caipira," so I went to the cash immediately and paid 999,00 Dinares for it. What a relief! With this gem saved, I took time to search for other rare CDs and DVDs; the selection at the store was impressive - from a new digitally remastered version of Milton Nascimento's debut US album, "Courage" (featuring Herbie Hancock, João Palma, José Marino, Hubert Laws, Deodato) to many recent sessions by Serbia's top jazzman, Dusko Goykovich, who currently lives in Cologne.
Regarding "Nó Caipira" it sounds as fresh and adventurous as in 1979, with Gismonti on his creative heyday. The CD cover art, however, is completely different of the original LP design, but the CD booklet includes all the data, the complete list of musicians, a long text by Braulio Pedroso (printed both in Portuguese and English), and even a transcription of the lead sheet of the opening track, "Saudações" (coincidently, the title of Gismonti's brand-new project for ECM, raved last Sunday by Ben Ratliff on the New York Times), a fantastic bossa nova dedicated to João Gilberto and performed by EG alone on guitar & vocals, with lovely lyrics by Brazilian poet Paulo Cesar Pinheiro.
There's another song with lyrics, "Canção da Espera" (this time by Geraldo Carneiro), sung by Zezé Motta, but all the remaining tracks are superb instrumental tunes such as the "Frevo" suite, "Dança das Sombras" and "Selva Amazônica" (dedicated to Heitor Villa-Lobos).
At that time, Gismonti's Academia de Danças group was formed by reedman Mauro Senise, bassist Zeca Assumpção and drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Zé Eduardo Nazário, besides, of course, the leader on acoustic piano, 6- and 12-string guitars, kalimbas (thanks to Airto Moreira), bambuzal, mouth berimbau, whistles, an instrument called "cathedral" (built by Pete Engelhart in California), accordion, pífano etc. Robertinho Silva guested on percussion, and Benito Juarez conducted both the Campinas Symphony Orchestra as well as a studio orchestra led by the late concertmaster Giancarlo Pareschi at Odeon's old studios (at Rua Mena Barreto) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with Nivaldo Duarte engineering.
As I said on the first paragraph: a masterpiece! And since Brazil treats his geniuses very well, you can buy it in Serbia...

Sjajna kanadska džez pijanistkinja i pevačica Dajana Krol /Diana Krall/, jedna od najvećih zvezda moderne džez muzike prvi put gostuje u Beogradu, u okviru svetske turneje na kojoj promoviše novi album „Quiet Nights”.
Dajana Krol rodjena u britanskoj kolumbiji počela je sa prvim nastupima u svojoj 15. godini kao džez pijanista, da bi u 17.godini, dobivši stipendiju Vankuverskog džez festivala, započela studije na Berkli koledžu/ Berklee College of Music/ u Bostonu. PreselivšI se u Los Andželes, počinje da nastupa sa poznatim pijanistom Džimi Roulsom /Jimmy Rowles/, što joj je omogućilo kontakte sa utucajnim profesrorima i producentima.
Dajana Krol 1993, izdaje svoj prvi album, “Stepping Out”, a zatim slede ”Only Trust Your Heart” (1995), “All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio” (1996), album koji je bio je nominovan za Grammy, “Love Scenes” (1997), “Jazz Vocal Album” (2000), “The Girl in the Other Room” i poslednji “Quiet Nights", objavljen marta ove godine.

Ovih dana je u centru pažnje i kao producent novog albuma Barbre Strajsend /Barbra Streisand/. Ploča „Love is the Answer” je debitovala na prvom mestu „Bilbordove” liste albuma, i u prvoj nedelji je prodata u čak 180.000 primeraka. Kritičari se bukvalno utrkuju ko će više pohvaliti album na kome se nalazi i nekoliko pesama koje je Strajsendova otpevala u pratnji Dajane Krol i njenog kvarteta.
- Odlično smo se zabavljali na snimanju. Igrale smo karte, razmenjivale tračeve i... mnogo jele! Dajana je veoma talentovana, a najviše sam uživala dok sam snimala pesme sa Dajaninim kvartetom. To me je podsetilo na vreme kada sam kao tinejdžerka pevala po klubovima - izjavila je Barbra Strajsend.

U jednom se svi slažu: Diana Krall jeste ime vredno poštovanja u svetu muzike. Ova Kanađanka norveškog porekla počela je da svira klavir sa svega četiri godine. Zahvaljujući ocu i njegovoj zaista velikoj kolekciji albuma lako je povukla njegov jazz gen, a zahvaljujući podršci porodice i napornom radu, svojoj odlučnosti i viziji, ona je žena za koju danas kažu: Ona ima sve!
I možemo reći da je baš tako. Sa četrdeset četiri godine, deset uspešnih ploča u diskografiji i karijeri dugoj šesnaest godina, ona je majka dvogodišnjih blizanaca, supruga Elvisa Costella i producent albuma najvećih zvezda savremene muzike. Uz njenu muziku najčešći pridev je moderan jazz. Kao naprodavaniji izvođač izdavačke kuće Verve, ona je dobitnica mnoštva Grammy i Juno nagrada, zna da je izuzetno fotogenična i svoj život opisuje kao „trenutno savršeni balans profesionalnog i personalnog".
