Free Download of High-Definition Gibson Guitar Album

Gibson Guitar, the world's premier musical instrument manufacturer and leader in music technology, has partnered with HDtracks.com to offer free, downloadable, high-definition music - a first of its kind collaboration for an instrument manufacturer. The exclusive offering to fans of Gibson Guitar, titled "Gibson Presents: Hot Tones in High-Definition", is a diverse collection of music performed by the world's best guitarists and will be available as a FREE download at Gibson.com for a limited time.

"Gibson Presents: Hot Tones in High-Definition" features exclusive tracks from legendary performers Johnny A, Michael Burks, Billy Burnette, Chris Cain, Nick Colionne, Tinsley Ellis, Eric Johnson, Peter Karp, Big Bill Morganfield, Kenny Neal, Arlen Roth with Sonny Landreth, Neal Schon and Johnny Winter plus a never-before-heard instrumental track featuring father and son team Abraham Laboriel Sr. and Jr performing with Slash. Guests at Gibson.com can read about the brilliant musical performances and download the entire album in HIGH DEFINITION for free now through www.HDtracks.com

On December 6, 2008, the first of a kind album will no longer be available with no plans to redistribute it in any format. Listen while you can!
**************
The high-definition format of Gibson Presents:

Hot Tones in High-Definition guarantees a listening experience never available before for consumers. The resolution of the audio does matter! They will also have the option of choosing the format in which to download it. Fans who download the album are automatically entered to win an exclusive Gibson Robot Les Paul guitar and other prizes from Creative Labs. Gibson Presents: Hot Tones in High-Definition is a non-DRM, high-definition download available in AIFF, FLAC, and 320kpbs MP3 formats. The download is available for 60 days in the U.S. and worldwide.

Consumers will have the chance to hear some of the world's greatest masters of guitar tone on a single disc. The project represents an enormous amount of passion for and dedication to creating the best possible high-definition experience for the Gibson consumer with no financial return to the company. It is a pioneering union of musical excellence and technical achievement for the 21st century.

The free distribution of a high-definition guitar album is possible now because of the massive access of today's Internet users to high-speed DSL and cable services. Gibson Guitar Chairman and CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz and David Chesky, co-founder of audiophile label Chesky Records are two technologists who, over a recent lunch in New York, combined their ideas and efforts to create the inaugural offering from Gibson.com and HDtracks.com.

"Gibson is committed to providing its customers with the most innovative and exciting musical experiences in the world," said Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar. "Gibson Presents: Hot Tones in High Definition will afford our customers the opportunity to download something in the highest of quality and is the first offering of its kind from any music company. This will be one of many such opportunities as we continue to partner with HDtracks on this pioneering effort."

"I've never been a fan of MP3s and I wanted to have a website that delivered the same quality music as you'd get in a record store. When Henry and I met we discussed nine million things. He thinks outside the box, and we decided that giving the public an opportunity to download something truly different and in such high quality was not only an offer of convenience but the genesis of Gibson Guitar's next step into technology," said David Chesky, co-founder of HDtracks.com, the partner on this project with Gibson.

All the files from Gibson Guitar and HDtracks will be offered in a choice of formats – AIFF, FLAC or 320kbs MP3 – depending on the consumer's needs. Both AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) and FLAC (Free lossless audion Codec) are uncompressed formats in which the audio data is not altered or compromised to reduce its file size during transfers. The audible difference of Gibson Presents: Hot Tones in High-Definition is amazingly clear and crisp. It presents more precise definition and depth and creates an experience consistent with original recordings for the listener.

The exclusive offering is very different from a typical online offering. It is better than CD quality audio with complete liner notes and a description of what the players did and how to accomplish the Hot Tones. The multiple formats allow music that is playable on any device without any DRM (digital rights management) limitations. Gibson Presents: Hot Tones in High-Definition is meant to be cranked up loud and for people who want to really LISTEN to the music.

"As an artist I am thrilled by the whole format since it's such high quality. To me this is all ear candy, no fluff, and it's the real deal," said Billy Burnette.

Gibson Presents: Hot Tones in High-Definition is a genius example of great performances and the future of music distribution. It is meant to inspire and entertain, and if Gibson has its way, is only the first of many such offerings that will be available exclusively through Gibson.com and HDtracks.com.

Hendrik Meurkens live in NY

German-born but now based in New York, Hendrik Meurkens, who plays both the chromatic harmonica and the vibraphone, will be appearing at Flushing Town Hall next week.

A two-mallet player in the tradition of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, Hendrik Meurkens was en-route to being an instantly recognizable vibraphonist when he heard Toots Thielemans. Inspired by the sound of Thielemans' harmonica, he taught himself the difficult-to-master instrument. He seems also very influenced by Brazilian harmonica master Mauricio Einhorn.

Hendrik Meurkens' other life-changing musical experience was his introduction to samba and bossa nova. He was so moved by Brazilian music that after perfecting his unique musical voice at Berklee, as a vibraphone major, he moved to Rio in the early 80s to totally immerse himself in music and culture of Brazil.

A regular Monday night gig at the popular Rio club, Club 21, soon demonstrated his acceptance by Brazilian musicians. Meurkens' poignant, emotionally affecting harmonica proved to be a sound that Brazilians strongly embraced, and during his Rio days, he met many musicians who later became collaborators in both Europe and New York.

Back in Germany by '83, he became a respected studio musician, recording with European Radio Orchestras and leading his own groups, as well as accompanying visiting legends like Harry 'Sweets' Edison and Buddy Tate.

Within ten years, he had established himself as the "new jazz harmonica voice," and moved to New York, thanks to an exclusive contract with the prestigious label, Concord Records. He has since recorded fifteen albums, and continues to perform as both a guest artist, and with his own groups, both in festivals and clubs globally.

Hendrik Meurkens' profound involvement in both jazz and Brazilian music resulted in a very personal and instantly recognizable version of samba-jazz. This music, a cross-cultural amalgam guaranteed to touch the heart, features his harmonica and vibes along with piano, bass and drums, playing his stirring originals and arrangements. The group has been documented on a number of CDs, such as "October Colors". Many Brazilian musicians have recorded with him: Cesar Machado, Jacaré, Claudio Roditi and Duduka da Fonseca, among others. He also covered tunes by the great NY-based Brazilian maestro Gaudencio Thiago de Mello.

As a featured artist, he has recorded with Charlie Byrd, Jimmy Cobb, Ivan Lins, Monty Alexander, Manfredo Fest and Mundell Lowe, as well as backing such leading artists as Astrud Gilberto and Olivia Newton John and touring with the Ray Brown Trio, Paquito D'Rivera, Oscar Castro Neves, Herb Ellis, Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd, and James Moody among many others. Also a successful composer (his compositions have been recorded by other artists and featured in the Hollywood movie, "Dolores Claiborne,") Hendrik Meurkens remains equally at home playing jazz or Brazilian music. "My mission is simple," he explains. "I want to create music of great beauty."

CD of the Day - "Boris Savoldelli: Insanology"

CD of the Day
Boris Savoldelli: "Insanology" (Mousemen/BTF) 2008

It's not Parker's "Anthropology" nor "Ornithology". It's Boris' "Insanology", one of the most intriguing vocal projects to come along in years. In this very challenging & adventurous album, the Italian singer performs alone in most of the songs - except for the title track and "Mindjoke", on which guitarist Marc Ribot guests. Like Mark Murphy, his teacher and adored idol, writes in the back cover: "Boris is one of the great undiscoverd preponents of simply superb singing and this CD proves it..." But Boris doesn't imitate Mark. He is his own man.

Through the use of electronic devices, Savoldelli is able to overdub his voice many times, creating stunning effects. Better: he sings with himself and creates his own choirs, reminding me of some of the best work by Urszula Dudziak in the 70s.
According to Boris' own words: "My CD is an experimental vocal project recorded using only a looper machine and no musical instruments, except for 2 tracks played by Marc Ribot on guitars.
The work starts from a mantric vision of each song, where overlapped loops of small harmonic and rhythmic patterns create the songs in an exquisite and complex balance."

Boris also wrote almost all songs, except Jimi Hendrix's classic "Crosstown Traffic" (one of Gil Evans' favorite tunes) and "In the Seventh Year" (Mark Murphy & Uli Rennert), my personal favorite track on "Insanology"; I swear I came to this conclusion at the first listening, before reading on the liner cover that my dear friend Mark was the composer.
"An arresting mix of painstakingly overdubbed vocals, human beatbox effects, African-inspired choral music, plus the odd visit to the world of Jimi Hendrix," says Chris Parker (on the Vortex website) about "Insanology", one of the best vocal albums of the year.
*****
Tonight, November 25, and also this coming Saturday, November 29, the Boris Savoldelli Trio with Nik Mazzucconi (bass) and Joe La Viola (sax) appears at Circolo Culturale Masetti, Bolzano.

Alexa Weber Morales: free concert tomorrow in Oakland

This is it! Tomorrow night it's Alexa Weber Morales' *first time headlining* at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland's lovely Jack London Square. She has almost sold out the 8 pm show, and guess what, folks -- "we had our fans in mind when we decided to make this FREE show rather than $16 per ticket," Alexa says. Yoshi's has done a few of these in the last few months, but they want
you to know that this will be the *last* free show for a long while. Please don't take this amazing place for granted!

Alexa: "I am so honored to be playing a club that just hosted a run of McCoy Tyner shows last week! I promise you, if you come down (and bring kids, they are more than welcome), you will leave our concert with an enjoyable lightness of being, a desire to be more color-coordinated
and a new fondness for fish! You will want to clap more frequently and laugh louder than anyone else. You will invest in dance lessons promptly, if only to ensure you do not dance like I do! And one week later, your significance in the universe will be revealed in a fortune cookie accidentally delivered to your table by a spastic waiter with Tourette's."

It's all connected, and so are we. Don't miss AWB tomorrow night!

THE ALEXA WEBER MORALES BAND
Plays Yoshi's Jack London Square
Tuesday, November 25th, 2008, 8 and 10 PM shows
510 Embarcadero West between Washington and Clay Streets
Oakland, CA 94607
(510) 238-9200
Price: FREE!!! ($3 service charge applies)

Oakland singer-songwriter Alexa Weber Morales performs at Yoshi's Jack London Square with a crack team of musicians Tuesday, November 25 at 8 and 10 PM. The Alexa Weber Morales Band has enjoyed success throughout this year, starting with a three-night run at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco and continuing through the San Jose Jazz Festival. At recent shows, the exuberant performer has emphasized the Brazilian segment of her repertoire, including selections from her Wayne Wallace-produced albums "Vagabundeo" ("Wanderings") and "Jazzmérica," the latter being my personal favorite; songs by Edu Lobo ("Ave Rara"), Caetano Veloso ("Luz do Sol"), and her own originals, most of them filled with smoking grooves like "The Goddess of War" and "I Did It, I Live It." Hope she will also sing her amazing versions of Stevie Wonder's "Smile Please", Clare Fischer's "Morning," and Miles Davis' "All Blues" (in 6/8).

With her trademark spectrum of world music including salsa, Brazilian, Caribbean and funk, Alexa Weber Morales brings a refreshing authenticity to the stage. "I find her command of Latin idioms completely convincing, entrancing even," writes Village Voice critic Tom Hull, while the San Francisco Chronicle predicts, "With a voice sweet, pure and strong, Alexa Weber Morales is poised to ride the Bay Area Latin jazz scene to national recognition."

The Alexa Weber Morales Band includes Murray Low, piano; Omar Ledezma, percussion and vocals; David Belove, bass; Zareen, vocals; and Deszon X. Claiborne, drums. Both Murray and
David are veteran studio musicians who can be heard on Alexa's two solo recordings.

These two shows are free of charge as a special "Audience Appreciation Night" at the peerless jazz club. Reserve your tickets online today ($3 service fee applies)!

Jack Prybylski: a perennial winner at Buffalo Music Awards

Jack Prybylski Wins Saxophonist of the Year at Buffalo Music Awards for 10th Time

At the 2008 Buffalo Music Awards, Jack Prybylski was declared the Saxophonist of the Year for the tenth time (four years consecutively from 2004-2008). "It's flattering and rewarding to be recognized by peers and fans. I appreciate that people continue to find enjoyment in my musical craft," said Prybylski.

In 2006, Prybylski released "Window Shopping" to rave reviews and a top ten listing in the Smooth Jazz News. “It doesn’t take long to realize why Prybylski has been awarded top honors for his sax work so many times," said Susan Lozinak of the Jazz Review. Currently, Prybylski is finalizing plans for his upcoming 2009 CD release. "The music will be a more urban direction with elements of dance and chill," he said.

Jack Prybylski is endorsed by Yamaha, Applied Microphone Technologies and Theo Wanne Mouthpieces.

Fusões e confusões na “Verve Originals”
Coleção traz CDs de Benson, Crusaders e Stanley Clarke
Arnaldo DeSouteiro

O repertório vai de Fats Domino (“Land of 1000 dances”) a Eumir Deodato (“Jackie, All”, dedicada à cantora Jackie Cain), passando por Stevie Wonder (“My cherie amour”). Em “My woman’s good to me”, “Out in the cold again” e na faixa-título, sucesso “soul” de Aaron Neville, Benson solta a voz que alguns anos depois lhe traria milhões de dólares via “This masquerade”.

“I got a woman and some blues” (30m03s) é um disco de “out-takes”.

Os melhores momentos ficam por conta das composições de Sample, especialmente “Goin’ down south”, o gospel-filosófico “Love can’t grow where the rain won’t fall” e a buliçosa “Listen and you’ll see”, marcada pelo saltitante toque no piano elétrico Wurlitzer. James Jamerson Sr. assumiu o baixo elétrico. Earl C. Palmer, a bateria. No repertório, clássicos do blues e do r&b tipo “Hallelujah, I love her so”, “C.C. Rider”, “Honest I do” e “Honky tonk”, em arranjos desinteressantes e previsíveis. Diet grooves.

Box Set of the Month: "Gulda/Bach"

Box Set of the Month
Friedrich Gulda: "J.S. Bach - Der Wohltemperierte Klavier" (MPS) 2007

From mundane dancefloor sounds to a divine masterwork.
A genius playing a heavenly masterpiece created by another genius.
This 4-CD box set, produced by Oliver Wazola, includes the complete Gulda recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's "The Well-Tempered Klavier", cut in April 1972 (Book 1) and May 1973 (Book 2) at Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's MPS Studio, in Villingen.

The 16-page booklet keeps Gulda's own liner notes. A small quote: "... that is therefore superfluous to give too much consideration to the question of wheter the modern piano is suitable for the interpretation of The Well-Tempered Clavier. After all, the piano is a keyboard instrument - exactly what was originally understood by "clavier". Of course, I have attemped where necessary to bring out harpsichord, clavichord or organ characteristics by means of touch and pedalling. On the other hand I was glad to have an instrument whose tone is neutral and which therefore makes it more possible than the original keyboard instruments to do justice to Bach's concept of abstract music (this at least is what I have tried to do)"
**********

Lili Haydn on "Californication" tomorrow!

Singer/violinist/composer Lili Haydn will make a special television appearance on the hit Showtime show “Californication.” In the episode airing this Sunday, November 23 at 10:00 pm ET/PT, Haydn will perform her song “Saddest Sunset” during a key scene at the legendary Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. “Californication is hilariously raw and fun, and the show had enough sense of irony to use me singing one of my most contemplative, intense songs right before a big scandalous sex scene,” Lili said about her experience for the TV show.

DVD of the Day - "Al Jarreau: In Concert"

DVD of the Day
Al Jarreau: "In Concert" (Rhino) 2008

At long last, the DVD release of Al Jarreau's stunning performance, in 1994, at the "Ohne Filter Musik Pur" German TV show. Since 1983, this series has served to showcase countless music legends, and some concerts - by Tania Maria, David Sanborn, The Crusaders, Airto & Flora Purim, Jose Feliciano, James Taylor, Richie Havens, John Mayall and the Shakatak group, among others - were issued, on Image Entertainment's "Purely Music" collection, on the LaserDisc format I loved so much. Most recently, Bill Wyman's performance in 2000 came out on DVD through the German In-Akustik label.

Jarreau's astonishing concert, filmed in front of a ecstatic live audience at the SWR TV Studios in Baden-Baden, opens with a fantastic reading of Jorge Ben's "Mas Que Nada", which, along with Gershwin's "Summertime", Elton John's "Your Song" and Jarreau's own "You Don't See Me", had been recorded one year earlier for Al's "Tenderness" project (yet to be reissued on DVD). There are also killer versions of Paul Desmond's "Take Five" (allowing Jarreau to showcase his incomparable ability to mimic an entire band, vocalizing congas and drums solos like no one else can do) and "Says," the lush theme a la Michel Colombier co-written by Al and Philippe Saisse in 1986 for the "L Is For Lover" album. By the way, "Take Five" became Al's signature tour-de-force after its success on the 2-LP set "Look To The Rainbow", partially recorded live in... Germany!

The top-class band features superdrummer Steve Gadd, keyboardists Neil Larsen and Larry Williams (the former Seawind member who doubles on tenor sax), and guitar ace Charles "Icarus" Johnson, whom I first met in California in the late 70s, playing with Airto (on the "I'm Fine, How Are You?" sessions and subsequent tour) and Raul de Souza (going to Brazil with him to perform at the 1978 Sao Paulo/Montreux Jazz Festival, aka "The First São Paulo International Jazz Festival"). The program also includes the pop-oriented hits "Roof Garden" and "We're In This Love Together" (mistitled "We're All In Love Together" on the DVD credits), plus the blues anthem "C C Rider", sung as the encore.

CD of the Day - "Norma Winstone: Distances"

CD of the Day
Norma Winstone, Glauco Venier & Klaus Gesing: "Distances" (ECM) 2008

British jazz vocalist Norma Winstone, Italian pianist Glauco Venier and German reedman Klaus Gesing (on soprano sax & bass clarinet) create a spare sonic landscape that paints shades of color around Winstone's evocative singing. The mood is quiet, reflective, and seductive, yet one is always aware of the skill behind the taut, telepathic sound-painting created by Winstone and her guests. A truly beautiful effort (one that belongs firmly in the ECM legacy) "Distances" should please chamber-jazz fans and vocal-jazz lovers alike.

Winstone's first ECM release in a decade (it came out on May 27, 2008) was cut in April 2007 at the Artesuono Recording Studio, Udine, Italy, by engineer Stefano Amerio, as a follow-up to "Chamber Music", released in 2003 for the Austrian division of the EmArcy label.
Produced by Manfred Eicher, includes a 28-page booklet with all lyrics, many pics (all b&w) and liner notes by Steve Lake.
The cover photo reproduces a still from Jean-Luc Godard's "Eloge d'amour".

Cole Porter's "Ebery Time We Say Goodbye", completely re-harmonized, is the only standard in the program. And that "change for Major to Minor" never sounded so strange. Even more adventurous are the journeys into Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes The Flood" (dedicated to Mars), "Giant's Gentle Stride" (inspired by John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", but in a very slow tempo), and "Remembering The Start of a Never Ending Story", a challenging tune by German pianist Hubert Nuss to which Norma added lyrics. Glauco's "Gorizia" (named for the Italian Alpine town on the border with Slovenia) features Norma's wordless vocals, recalling her days with John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler on Azimuth (not to be confused with the Brazilian fusion group).

The chamber-jazz trio even sits a poem by Pier Paolo Pasolini, "Ciant da li Campanis" ("Song of the Bells") on top of Glauco's loose adaptation of Erik Satie's "Petite Ouverture à Danser". The last of several suprises comes in the closing tune, a humorous free calypso created by Norma, Glauco & Klaus based on a poem by the Panama-born to Jamaican parents writer Andrew Salkey.

CD of the Day - "Norma Winstone: Chamber Music"

CD of the Day
Norma Winstone, Glauco Venier & Klaus Gesing: "Chamber Music" (EmArcy Austria) 2003

Recorded in Italy in 2002, the first self-produced album by this European chamber-jazz acoustic trio sounds even more reflexive, introspective, somber and full of melancholy than the recent "Distances." The title track is built upon a James Joyce text published in 1908, mixed with the melody of Lowell Mason/Sarah Adams' "Nearer My God To Thee." Then comes the album highlight, Vince Mendonza's "Panis Angelicus." There's a re-construction of Tom Waits' "San Diego Serenade" (from Waits' 1978 LP "The Ghosts of Saturday Night"), and a Klaus Gesing tune, "Remember," based on a poem by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894).

CD of the Day - "Alex Maguire: Brewed in Belgium"

CD of the Day
Alex Maguire Sextet: "Brewed in Belgium" (MoonJune) 2008

Recorded live on October 27, 2007 at De Singer in Rijkevorsel, Belgium by Henk Weltevreden for the Dutch National Radio (VPRO) on November 7, 2007.
Featuring: Alex Maguire (acoustic piano, synth), Michel Delville (synth guitar), Robin Verheyen (tenor & soprano sax), Jean-Paul Estiévenart (trumpet & flugelhorn), Damien Polard (electric bass) & Laurent Delchambre (drums).
Graphics by Leonardo Pavkovic.

British born jazz and jaz-rock-fusion pianist/keyboardist/composer Alex Maguire, has studied with John Cage and Howard Riley, and has performed extensively around the globe. Among others, he has worked with Michael Moore, Elton Dean in several projects (including Newsense, Headless, EDQ etc), Pip Pyle's Bash, and was keyboardist of reformed Canterbury scene legends Hatfield & The North (2004-2006, with Phil Miller, Richard Sinclair and Pip Pyle). He is also founding member of newborn InCaHat with Phil Miller, Fred Baker and Mark Fletcher (a band performing the music of In Cahoots, Hatfield & The North and National Health).

Alex Maguire and the fine fleur of Belgian jazz and jazz-rock musicians team up to launch a repertoire ranging from lyrical to groovy tunes, haunting melodies, free improvisation and high-energy interaction. In this record, Maguire’s Belgian sextet includes Jean-Paul Estiévenart on trumpet, Michel Delville on guitar and guitar-synth, Damien Polard on bass and Laurent Delchambre on drums (four members of notable Belgian rock-jazz band and another exclusive MoonJune recording artist The Wrong Object) as well as Flemish saxophonist, now based in New York City, Robin Verheyen (who has just released his first solo opus with American pianist Bill Carrothers).

The quality of this recording, which was captured live by VPRO (the Dutch National Radio) in October 2007, confirms Maguire’s status as a vital presence on the international jazz scene, one which is capable of lacing the most intense lyricism with a juicy experimentalism that is reminiscent of Cecil Taylor’s best work and results in what is perhaps best described as a paradoxical and delightfully unstable form of “lyric experimentalism”.

Maguire’s talents as a pianist and a keyboard player are so diverse, his “touch” so personal (Maguire belongs to that class of musicians who have succeeded in developing their own, immediately recognizable sound), his telepathic conversations with the other musicians in the band so explosive and brilliantly unpredictable that the line that divides the written parts from the collective improvisations is often impossible to draw. It is a tribute to the sextet’s improvisational skills that the mixture remains coherent and fascinating throughout despite the wide range of styles that characterizes this highly unusual record. These, of course bear the mark of Canterbury School prog-jazz, but hey also contain swinging upbeat tunes such as “John’s Fragment”, poignant, meditative and mournful hymns such as “Psychic Warrior” (Maguire’s compositions dedicated to late Softmachinist and British saxophone jazz legend Elton Dean) as well as faster-than-light melodic improvisations like “Pumpkin Soup” that flow in and out of funky syncopated cadences and English pastoral flavors.

Liner Notes:
"Water, hops, malt and barley – all fine ingredients in their own right, I’m sure you will agree, but it’s only really when they are lovingly brought together by the masterbrewer that they leapfrog up the culinary ladder and assume regal status. His skill and experience conspire to transform the ordinary into the divine – it’s no coincidence that some of the finest brews are the creation of monastic communities! In Belgium, this art is taken to unprecedented heights and becomes the art of liquid cooking and I absolutely love to cook; to take a bunch of disparate elements and inveigle them into an entirely new unity. Individual flavours give up their unique identities in the interest of the whole ensemble; thus it was with this project.I first met Michel Delville at the Spirit of 66 in Verviers, Belgium, when I was playing there with Pip Pyle’s BASH! We made an immediate connection and there and then planned a future “cook-in”. The intervening years up to October 2007 saw us formulating separate yet related recipes; Michel got busy cooking with his band The Wrong Object and with Elton Dean (the result of which can be heard on the great “The Unbelievable Truth” cd) whilst I continued my sous-chef training with Pip and the newly-reformed Hatfield and The North. After the untimely departures of our head-chefs, it seemed apposite to take some of their recipes (how I miss Pip’s divine pork with cherries and Elton’s ‘secret’ chicken satay!) and see if we could add a few ingredients of our own. This is the final dish, and for us, it’s a new “fusion-food”, rooted in tradition yet bristling with some previously undiscovered herbs and spices. Taste it for yourself and let your ears savour it!Needless to say, we weren’t alone in the kitchen and none of this would have been possible without our esteemed musico-cookery comrades, Robin, Jean-Paul, Damien and Laurent – we salute you chefs! Additionally, the food would never have made from the kitchen to the table without the invaluable assistance of Henk Weltevreden (insistent attention to taste and freshness of ingredients) and Danny Mathys and his family – people who put the pump back into pumpkin soup. The last round must inevitably be bought for the New York chef master Leonardo Pavkovic, without whom this particular brew would never have made it fromhop farm to table top – cheers, alla salute, prost, chin-chin, à saúde, nazdravlje and santé to you.Enjoy with something “Brewed in Belgium!” Bon appétit." - Alex Maguire

"Jacofest" - A Tribute to Pastorius @ Iridium, NY, Nov 20-23

Jacofest - A Tribute to Jaco Pastorius at Iridium November 20 - 23

The late great bassist-composer Jaco Pastorius, an undeniable force on contemporary jazz during the ‘70s as well as a towering influence on two generations of musicians, will be feted at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York from November 20 - 23. Included in this all-star gala, produced by impresario Charles Carlini, are Pastorius colleagues and former bandmates like trumpeters Randy Brecker, Miles Evans and Lew Soloff, saxophonists Alex Foster and Butch Thomas, trombonist David Bargeron, keyboardist Delmar Brown, guitarist David Gilmore and drummer Kenwood Dennard. Featured bass players are T.M Stephens, Matt Garrison, and Jaco's son, Felix Pastorius. For reservations, please call the box office at (212) 582-2121 or visit http://www.iridiumjazzclub.com/

Crafted by Musical Director, Kenwood Dennard, this, not-to-be-missed, event, is a heartfelt devotion to his friend and fellow musician Jaco Pastorius, whom Dennard accompanied for many years. It is also an early celebration of what would have been Jaco’s Birthday (on December 1, 1951).

Although Jaco Pastorius passed away over 21 years ago (on September 21, 1987), his musical legacy remains as strong today as ever. Jazz artists around the world continue to cover his compositions or offer up personal tributes to the man on their recordings, all attesting to the indelible mark that Jaco made in his relatively short career. Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania on December 1, 1951, Pastorius grew up in Fort Lauderdale and as a teenager began playing around the South Florida music scene .

Originally a drummer, he switched to electric bass at age 16 after injuring his wrist in a football game and adapted remarkably well to his new instrument. Within a year, it was clear to everyone on the scene that he possessed special gifts as a bassist. Growing by leaps and bounds, Jaco would quickly develop a wholly new and unprecedented vocabulary on the instrument. After performing in a series of local Florida bands, Pastorius was “discovered” by Blood, Sweat & Tears drummer Bobby Columby, who produced Jaco’s landmark self-titled debut for Epic Records in late 1975.

Jaco joined Weather Report, the premier fusion band of the ‘70s, in April of 1976 and appeared on the band’s groundbreaking 1977 Columbia album, "Heavy Weather." He remained with Weather Report for six years, appearing on a string of acclaimed recordings including 1978’s "Mr. Gone," 1979’s Grammy Award-winning "8:30," and 1980’s "Night Passage." Pastorius’ second recording as a leader, 1981’s "Word of Mouth" on Warner Bros., introduced such ambitious Jaco compositions as “Liberty City,” “John and Mary” and the adventurous title track along with a full big band arrangement of his most famous composition, “Three Views of a Secret.” Jaco’s 1983 album, "Invitation," documented his Word of Mouth Big Band on tour in Japan. He subequently toured in a scaled-down sextet version of Word of Mouth and with the PDB trio-featuring guitarist late Hiram Bullock and drummer Kenwood Dennard.

A man with a big heart and a big beat, drummer Tony Reedus cared for other people the way he cared about making a band swing.

"He was true blue, he'd do anything for you," said pianist Mulgrew Miller, who knew Mr. Reedus as a youth in Memphis, where the drummer was born, and later employed him in his trio in the late 1980s and early 1990s. "He was supersensitive," said his wife, violinist Jenise Grice-Reedus. "He'd see a person who was sad and would go talk to that person, and would have another friend for life."

"He was a funny guy," said organist and pianist Mike LeDonne, with whom Mr. Reedus regularly performed. "Just a sweetheart, that's what Tony Reedus was, and great to work with."

Mr. Reedus died Sunday of a pulmonary embolism en route by ambulance to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in the Richmond Hill section of Queens. He had collapsed at John F. Kennedy International Airport after getting off an American Airlines flight from Bologna, Italy, where he had been performing with LeDonne. He was 49. Mr. Reedus lived in Irvington with his wife and their 5-year-old daughter, Cameron. He had been troubled with undetermined gastrointestinal issues since August.

A superb musician, Mr. Reedus picked up the drums when he was 13 and broke into the upper echelon of jazz just seven years later, performing and recording with innovative trumpeter Woody Shaw. In a story in The Star-Ledger in 2006, he likened joining Shaw to a baseball player "going from single-A to the Show." "It was music on such a high level," said Mr. Reedus.

He played on Shaw's albums "United" (Columbia) and "Master of the Art" (Elektra/Musician). Mr. Reedus also played and recorded with such masters as trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, saxophonist Benny Golson, and guitarist Dave Stryker. Mr. Reedus also was a leader who made three solo albums.

Mr. Reedus was noted for his all-around drum kit acumen -- in particular, his ride cymbal beat. "He had a real wide beat, and his feel on the cymbal was unique," said Stryker, whose organ trio included Mr. Reedus for several years. "He felt great to play with, just really swinging, dancing."

Of the importance of that beat, Mr. Reedus said in 2006, "It's a heavy feeling that makes people want to pat their feet, sway back and forth. When people come to see you play, they want to escape, they want to feel good. Music is a celebration of life that comes from the heart."

Mr. Reedus returned to college in the middle of his career, earning a B.A. in music from Rutgers University-New Brunswick in 2005. "The day he graduated was one of the happiest days of his life," said Grice-Reedus, who plays with the Garden State Philharmonic and the Plainfield Symphony and leads the Ebony String Quartet.

Another was the birth of his daughter. "He loved being a father, being married," said Stryker.

Linda Grice, Mr. Reedus' mother-in-law, said: "He loved his family; he took good care of my daughter and my granddaughter." Mr. Reedus' survivors include his brothers Chris and Keith, both of Memphis.

A visitation will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., with services at 4 p.m., at the Prospect Presbyterian Church, 646 Prospect St., Maplewood. More information is available by calling (973) 763-8955 or visiting the church's website (prospectchurch.org).
