"Brazilian Horizons Vol.2"
(Milestone)
Review by Jonah Colon
Now, under normal circumstances I don't like compilations. Why not? Because grazing is an activity for cud chewers and me no sheep. However, "Brazilian Horizons" is only a compilation of Brazilian-influenced jazz music in the same way that the Complete Sonnets of Shakespeare is a mere compilation of Elizabethan poetry.
Arnaldo DeSouteiro, the same pair of ears behind "A Trip to Brazil", which is the best bossa-nova compilation known to science, is responsible for putting Vince Guaraldi's "Samba de Orfeu" right next to John Coltrane's "Bahia" - this is a compiler principled enough not to include so much as a single well-known, played out or otherwise obvious tune for the sake of selling a few more copies. No, instead we get McCoy Tyner and Freddie Hubbard doing "Manhã de Carnaval", Bill Evans, Bola Sete...nothing less than a love letter to the influence of Brazil on jazz music.
Every one an unheard classic. The man has homing ears. Sit around the CD machine, swim wear on: get some fun. Fall in love, get a tan. It is summer. (JC)
